What is Kinesiology Tape?

Kinesiology tape is a thin, elastic, adhesive tape applied to the skin to treat a variety of muscular and physical ailments. Kinesiology Tape is a durable, movable tool that protects muscles and promotes optimal function while allowing the wearer a full range of motion. Made of a mixture of high grade cotton, elastic, and a heat-activated adhesive, Kinesiology Tape can be worn for 3-4 days at a time.

What are the benefits of Kinesiology Tape?

Kinesiology Tape can help treat a variety of muscular and physical issues. The tape is applied over the muscle to reduce inflammation and pain, relax strained muscles, and allow the wearer to feel comfortable and access a full range of movement. Some ailments that can be treated with Kinesiology Tape are lower back strain, herniated disc, knee pain, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, subluxations, and a variety of sport and movement-related injuries.

How is Kinesiology Tape applied?

At a basic level, Kinesiology Tape is applied over the affected muscle while it is in a fully stretched-out position. Tape is adhered to the skin from the top to the bottom of the stretched-out muscle with very little stretch to the tape itself. Depending on the purpose for the tape – support or relaxation of the muscle – the tape may be applied in different ways. Consult your chiropractor for help applying the tape correctly.

Does Kinesiology Tape hurt?

For the vast majority of users, Kinesiology Tape is comfortable and does not hurt at all. When applied correctly by a chiropractor, this durable, elastic tape is breathable and able to be worn for several days. Skin irritation is possible, so be sure to remove the tape and consult your chiropractor if you experience redness or inflammation after use.

What are the challenges with Kinesiology Tape?

For most users, Kinesiology Tape is easy to use and comfortable when worn. However, there are a few common challenges:

  • Dirty or sweaty skin can prevent the tape from sticking. Before application, clean the skin of sweat, dirt, grime, and any other substance that may affect the adhesivity of the tape.
  • Skin irritation is rare, but if you find your skin is red and/or swelling after application of the tape, remove the tape immediately.
  • After application, wait 1 hour before showering or physical exercise to give the adhesive time to work properly.
  • Do not stretch the tape out a great deal prior to application. This will help you avoid skin irritation.

How is Kinesiology Tape different from other kinds of Strapping Tape?

Kinesiology Tape is a more dynamic and multipurpose tool than traditional athletic strapping tape. Generally, strapping tape is non-elastic and is wrapped tightly around an affected muscle or joint to provide support while restricting movement. Strapping tape can only be used for a short period of time before it must be removed to reignite circulation.

Kinesiology tape is made of cotton to promote breathability and comfort, elastic to promote a full range of motion, and a light, hypoallergenic and latex-free adhesive that is safe for most types of skin. Kinesiology Tape can be used to relax or support muscles. Finally, rather than being wrapped around the muscle or joint, Kinesiology tape is applied directly over the skin.

How durable is Kinesiology Tape? Can I shower with it on?

Because of its similarity to the skin in both thickness and elasticity, Kinesiology Tape is durable and strong while remaining comfortable for the wearer. Most users can wear Kineseology Tape for 3-4 days, and the heat-reactive adhesive should last through showers, sleep, and perspiration.
