Summer Fitness: 3 Great Ways To Kick It Up A Notch

Whether you are currently in a regular workout regime or not, the summer is a perfect time to stretch your legs and break a sweat.  Your summer schedule is sure to fill up quickly between the concerts, food-fests and backyard BBQ’s, so be sure to carve out some time to give yourself the gift of fitness this summer!  While the weather is warm, it’s a great time to put new healthy habits in place that can carry you through to next summer.

  1. Weekend Adventure Getaway: Take a weekend away from the cellphones, miscellaneous work emails and overcrowded brunch spots to reconnect in nature.  Plan a weekend camping, hiking or biking that allows you to break out of the day-in-day-out routine and explore some place new.  A weekend in nature also doubles as a great way to reconnect with yourself, your significant other or your best friends.
  2. Start a training program: If you’ve always wanted to give running a shot, now is the perfect time to start!  If you are a runner, take some time to set new goals for yourself and share then with your running group.  Shaking things up is good for your body and mind and helps prevent an exercise rut.  If your brand new to running, there are plenty of great programs that can get you up and going, such as Couch to 5K (which has an app to help you stay on track and increase your mileage appropriately to avoid injury)
  3. Get a work out buddy: The power of accountability as it pertains to exercise has been well researched and documented – in fact, a recent study found that working out with a partner can actually double your performance level.
